The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek (KGL) is the valley's signature high-altitude walk — roughly a week of meadows, mountain passes and a necklace of glacial lakes that change colour with the light. It's moderately challenging and breathtakingly beautiful.
The route at a glance
The classic KGL runs from Sonmarg to Naranag over about 6–7 days, crossing several passes above 4,000 m and visiting Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and the twin Gangabal lakes. Total distance is around 70 km.
Difficulty & fitness
KGL is rated moderate-to-difficult. You'll walk 10–15 km a day with steep pass crossings and altitude up to ~4,200 m. Good cardiovascular fitness, prior trekking experience and a few weeks of training are strongly recommended. Acclimatisation and pacing matter more than raw speed.
Best season & preparation
The trek is open roughly July to September, after the snow melts and before it returns. Carry layered clothing, a quality sleeping bag, sturdy waterproof boots, and trek with a registered guide or operator who handles permits, camps and food.
